Steps to Enroll in Medicare

Many people feel unsure about what steps to take when becoming eligible for Medicare. Eligibility typically occurs either due to age (turning 65) or qualifying disability.

When You Become Eligible

Most individuals qualify for Medicare at age 65 and are automatically enrolled in:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance)

  • Part B (Medical Insurance)

Coverage usually begins on the first day of the month you turn 65. If your birthday falls on the first day of the month, your coverage typically begins on the first day of the prior month.

If you are approaching age 65 and have not received information about enrollment, it may be time to contact the Social Security Administration.

However, before enrolling in Part B, there are important considerations.

Should You Delay Medicare Part B?

Part B covers outpatient and doctor services, but not everyone needs to enroll right away.

You may want to delay Part B if:

  • You or your spouse are actively working

  • You are covered under an employer group health plan

  • The employer has 20 or more employees

In this case, you may be able to keep your employer coverage and enroll in Part B later without penalty.

You may need to enroll in Part B immediately if:

  • The employer group has fewer than 20 employees

  • You do not have qualifying employer coverage

Understanding your specific situation before enrolling can help you avoid unnecessary costs.

Medicare Late Enrollment Penalties

If you are eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B but delay enrolling in Part B without having other qualifying coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty.

The penalty increases your Part B premium by 10% for each full year you delay enrollment. This higher premium typically applies for as long as you have Medicare.

Because this penalty can last for life, it is important to evaluate your coverage carefully before choosing to delay enrollment.
